ChatGPT-4.1 is live – Surpasses predecessor 4.5, Turing test is cracked
OpenAI has secretly launched and activated ChatGPT-4.1. Observers note significant improvements over GPT-4.5, which did not produce great results. ChatGPT-4.1 is said to easily pass the Turing test.
The blog of OpenAI competitor Anthropic has given the world the first impression of ChatGPT-4.1. Because in a paper on how the AI language model Claude 4 was trained and what features it achieves, there is a comparison with ChatGPT-4.1. However, the release of ChatGPT-4.1 by OpenAI has not yet been publicly announced or commented on. Speculation about a current update to ChatGPT has been circulating on the internet for weeks, especially since Elon Musk, as the head of X (formerly Twitter), stated that in the future, a well-trained AI model would be realized in the form of a bot for X. Nevertheless, up to now, general availability of GPT-4.1 could not be detected, not through the usual DLabs API or other common channels. Reading between the lines in Anthropic’s blog post, ChatGPT-4.1 benefits from internal developments at OpenAI.
ChatGPT-4.1 convinces with performance in the Turing test
Whereas GPT-4 and GPT-4.5 still lagged behind close competitors Bard and Claude in the summer of 2023 in certain areas, ChatGPT-4.1 seems to regain top form. According to Anthropic, Claude 4 is the next big milestone in the AI competition but admits that ChatGPT-4.1 is at least equally competent.
The Turing test is a reference here. It was proposed by computer pioneer Alan Turing in 1950 as a concept for measuring human-like intelligence of machines. The test involves human testers trying to distinguish between a machine and a human in conversation via text chat. If the test persons cannot tell the difference, the software is considered AI, which, thanks to self-learning capabilities, possesses or is approaching human-like intelligence. Turing himself predicted in the early 1950s that machines would not pass the test before 2000. He was wrong. Since the early 2010s, AI models have passed the Turing test in special conditions.
Claude 4 can pass the Turing test in limited applications, according to Anthropic, but with ChatGPT-4.1, the chances should be even higher. Meanwhile, ChatGPT-4.1 also delivers impressive results when it comes to multitasking and is again superior to GPT-4.5 and Claude 4 in specific professional areas. In smaller tests, ChatGPT-4.1 sets new standards.
Conclusion: New ways to use ChatGPT-4.1
Many people are excited about becoming owners of a Tesla vehicle for a particular reason: Tesla’s FSD (Full Self-Driving) software is designed to eventually make the human driver redundant. That’s what buyers are counting on with investments of 15,000 euros upwards. ChatGPT-4.1 is aimed at individuals and companies who want their AI language models to have specific qualities in various applications and may also contribute enormously to solving complex problems in professional applications.
So far in 2023, ChatGPT has established itself as the industry leader and addressed the issues users had with longer texts. With GPT-4.5, big steps towards optimization were not noticeable. Therefore, it is expected that after the introduction of GPT-4.1, OpenAI will be able to regain lost ground and market share. Anthropic’s obviously unintentional announcement of ChatGPT-4.1 must have accelerated this process.
