Bitcoin in the S&P 500
MicroStrategy, known for its massive Bitcoin reserves, could be included in the key stock index S&P 500 at the end of the current quarter. For Bitcoin, this would mean additional acceptance.
The S&P 500 as the most important stock index
The S&P 500 is the world’s most important stock index, representing the 500 largest US companies. The index’s market capitalization is around $37 trillion worldwide. For listed companies, inclusion in the S&P 500 is a major event that often multiplies their trading liquidity because large investment funds use the index as a benchmark and invest accordingly. Companies are selected quarterly for the S&P 500 based on various criteria such as market value, public float, financial viability, and trading volume.
MicroStrategy as a candidate for the S&P 500
MicroStrategy, known as a US provider of business intelligence software, has also become widely recognized in the crypto industry due to its Bitcoin strategy. Currently, the company holds about 152,000 Bitcoin, which corresponds to a market value of around $4.8 billion. MicroStrategy shares (MSTR) have increased by more than 130% in the last 12 months, driven by the bullish Bitcoin market.
MicroStrategy’s market capitalization now stands at around $5.5 billion. There are increasing speculations and hopes that the company might be admitted to the S&P 500 in the next update at the end of September.
Implications for Bitcoin
MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor is not the only reason why MicroStrategy’s inclusion in the S&P 500 would be remarkable. The company openly shares that its crypto holdings are one of its driving economic factors, thereby representing Bitcoin in the stock market mainstream. If MicroStrategy is included in the S&P 500, this would be an important step for Bitcoin’s acceptance in the US financial system.
Furthermore, MicroStrategy’s stocks could see increased demand, raising Bitcoin prices as a result. However, these are speculations thus far, and it remains to be seen whether MicroStrategy can meet all necessary conditions for entering the S&P 500.
