IOTA star developer Hans Moog still active? The rumor mill is churning

Hans Moog aka hus_qy is probably the best-known developer at IOTA and was supposed to lead the project technologically towards decentralization. But now rumors are flaring up again that Hans Moog has broken away from IOTA.

IOTA is falling further and further down the list of the most valuable and important cryptocurrencies and is now only listed at around 130th place by the data service CoinGecko, for example. The unfulfilled promise to release the IOTA EVM in the first quarter is causing disappointment, and a new target date is not known. The already tense and tetchy situation has now been further exacerbated by the suspicion that star developer Hans Moog has dropped out of IOTA. ThatsNotMyCode at X made this public on Friday and cites Moog’s documented developer activities at IOTA as proof, which have apparently not been taking place for around four weeks.

Hans Moog himself has not yet reacted to the alleged news, although he is probably aware that his possible departure from IOTA would cause further chaos. This is because Moog was or is the person in the official development team who holds the reins in the project to set up a decentralized IOTA 2.0 with a “Coordidice”. Hans Moog is also a respected figure in the IOTA community because he has repeatedly and authentically communicated setbacks in the development work.

On the other hand, there was already speculation about Moog leaving IOTA in the summer of 2023. And ThatsNotMyCode had already suspected at the beginning of April via X that Moog was retiring, which he denied at the time. Hans Moog’s last IOTA post on X also dates back to this time, in which he stated that he was stepping down from his role as spokesperson for the ecosystem. About two months ago, Moog explained that the organizational structures of the IOTA Foundation had been reorganized and that he had agreed to a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) as part of this. He advised his fans to contact the IOTA Foundation Board headed by Dominik Schiener directly if they had any questions. However, it is known that Schiener usually ignores critical questions, including those about IOTA 2.0.

Conclusion: Will IOTA have to cope with the departure of Hans Moog?

Schiener and Moog do not always see eye to eye, which has already been publicly discussed in the IOTA side project Shimmer (SMR), for example. According to CoinGecko, Shimmer’s price curve hit a new all-time low last night and, realistically, the project can be classified as a failure. Now the dream of a decentralized IOTA 2.0 is also cracking, as Moog has taken over the concept, responsibility and parts of the programming. But of course it could also be that Moog is enjoying a long vacation or is indisposed for other reasons. In this case, however, Schiener and the IOTA Foundation would be asked to clarify what the situation is with Moog and how things should continue with “Coordicide”.
