ChatGPT Now With Purchase Advice, Soon to Feature Advertisements in AI Models
OpenAI has announced further commercialization of ChatGPT. Buyers of the Pro model can now request purchase advice for any products. In the future, many AI models are expected to contain advertisements.
OpenAI is taking a significant step forward in making its AI model ChatGPT commercially viable. In a blog post, the company explains that paying users of ChatGPT Pro can now get purchase advice for any product. To achieve this, OpenAI is integrating a new service, KAYAK, which provides the AI with detailed product information and can potentially lead to purchases. In other words, ChatGPT Pro can act as a personal shopping assistant. Similar to this development and probably building upon its technology, OpenAI plans to introduce a complete Ad system in ChatGPT by the middle of next year, enabling businesses to display targeted ads in real-time.
This could be a game-changer for OpenAI as the company focuses on monetization. Before, ChatGPT Pro was primarily attractive to those who require premium features like GPT-4, priority access, and extended sessions. By integrating purchase advice, significant additional value is added to ChatGPT Pro that could appeal to a much broader audience.
According to insider reports to which CNN has access, Amazon, one of the largest players in digital advertising, is already in talks with OpenAI about future collaborations. OpenAI’s blog post suggests collaboration options for marketers of all scales, including large companies, emphasizing transparency and the protection of user data. The topic is expected to remain sensitive as some see critical potential when AI like ChatGPT publishes ads.
Until now, OpenAI has not included traditional advertisements in ChatGPT, making it a space free for independent information and advice. However, this unique selling point is increasingly coming under pressure as the associated revenues are urgently needed. First announcements for ‘advertisements in AI’ are expected in the coming months, further details might be shared at OpenAI’s annual DevDay scheduled for November 6, 2023.
Until then, ChatGPT’s purchase advice, which is currently only available in the Pro version, can be perceived as a precursor to more extensive integration of advertising. Whether and how OpenAI considers its users’ feedback in this transition remains to be seen, and hence will be a topic to discuss in the near future.
